The 99 Names of Allah — al-Asmāʾ al-Ḥusnā

On the Most Beautiful Names

The ninety-nine names of Allahal-Asmāʾ al-Ḥusnā, the Most Beautiful Names — are the attributes by which God names Himself in the Qur’ān and the Sunna. The list presented here follows the narration of at-Tirmidhī (Sunan, hadith 3507), the one most widely cited in reference works. Other Companions and scholars compiled slightly different lists drawn from the Qur’ān — committing these names to memory and meditation is not conditioned on any single list.

“Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred minus one. Whoever enumerates them shall enter Paradise.”

On the transliterations

The transliterations follow the DIN 31635 convention, standard in most academic works. Long vowels are marked with a macron (ā, ī, ū) and emphatic consonants with an underdot (ḍ, ḥ, ṣ, ṭ, ẓ). Hamza is rendered ʾ and ʿayn ʿ. The precision is deliberate: Sukūn addresses readers who wish to pronounce these names correctly. TODO(scholar) — scholarly review of each English gloss.

List compiled from the narration of at-Tirmidhī (Sunan, 3507). Transliterations follow DIN 31635. French and English glosses adapted for Sukūn. This document is pending scholarly review — corrections are welcome at contact@sukun.care.
